Aquarium Maintenance Problems
Overpopulation:
A major problem in many aquariums due to first-time and which may be as threatening their existence. Occurs not only because too many fish but also can be caused by mixing too many different species. Many fish are gregarious and live better in the company of peers.
How to calculate the right number? It’s about learning the following rule: One liter of water per inch of fish and not exceed it in any way. We should also note that, if all goes well and the fish are adapted, in 6-12 months and will grow well beyond their capacity recommended if there were no casualties.
Poor feeding:
- Excessive food: It is very common due to ignorance, adding more food than necessary. It is true that fish are always healthy appearance of being hungry and as we approach the aquarium, we need to show your coming to us with their mouths wide open up to the surface for food. We must not get carried away by grief and add more of the proper. Read the rest of this entry »
Tests for ALL Aquariums
PH Test
In general aquarium fish live well in a neutral pH (equal to 7), although more extensive margins (from 6.8 to 7.4). We try not to exceed this range. Some types of fish live best in conditions more extreme pH, strongly acidic or basic, but it will learn over time.
Tests of nitrite and nitrate
Ammonia, a waste product that comes from the detritus of fish and decaying organic matter is degraded to nitrites, which in high concentrations are very toxic to fish. In aquariums that work, the colonies of nitrifying bacteria that live in the filter, gravel, etc.., Are responsible for decomposing these into nitrates, far less toxic.
It is essential to evaluate the concentration of these products in the aquarium to address them promptly if decompensate levels. Read the rest of this entry »
Aquarium Maintenance
We have already commented that the aquarium is not like a painting standing for a few seconds to admire from time to time. It requires a little work every day but without strain. Perhaps those who have no contact with this world think that is somewhat complicated, but spend five minutes a day with our aquarium would be sufficient to maintain it. At that time we can see that all the devices work properly, feed and look closely at the fish and plants to detect any abnormalities, and even remove any dead leaves (and occasionally also a fish).
A part of this week should be more thorough cleaning the aquarium (eg, moving a magnet cleaner to remove the potential black dots) and monthly change half the volume of water (tap water properly conditioned). Occasionally it is necessary “vacuuming the bottom” and rinse all parts of the filter cleaner. Read the rest of this entry »
Aquarium Plants
Drawbacks
1 .- We require more time to the aquarium: you have to observe carefully, watch for if we become ill, if they are parasites … daily and remove any remaining leaves lost and damaged.
2 .- It is somewhat expensive, since, although quite regenerate and grow and repopulate some are very good, it is normal to start dying slowly and have to acquire new from time to time. Read the rest of this entry »
Installing The Aquarium
After deciding the exact location and place it on a table strong enough to support the weight it can reach, we proceed:
- Placed a stone base, previously washed in the background (available in specialty stores a multitude of colors, shapes and sizes of gravel for aquariums). Mixed with the gravel is recommended to put fertilizer for plants. Even if we had decided not to put plants, we can always change your mind later and is more cumbersome to add later. All base will have a minimum thickness of about 5 or 6 inches. If we decided to employ a filter bottom plates shall be placed under the base of stones.
- Part of the decoration chosen may be interesting to put it below (eg high-volume rock).
- We fill much of the container with tap water (two thirds of total volume) and introduce the rest of the decor as our tastes (there are many possibilities to choose from, funds aquarium, rocks, caves, natural or artificial plants and figures ornamentals. Typically we try to hide or conceal electrical appliances (heater, filter, diffuser tubes …) between plants or behind rocks. Read the rest of this entry »
The Necessary Equipment for Fish: Thermo-Heater, Light and Aeration
The thermo-heater
Fully submersible electric appliance into the aquarium and is responsible for maintaining the water at constant temperature. No need to use it for cold water fish (it is enough ambient temperature of our house) but is essential in tropical aquariums. We choose the ideal temperature according to the inhabitants of the aquarium (usually around 26-27 degrees) and the heater is switched on and off automatically as needed.
It is controlled from the outside with a thermometer (there are very simple, like a thin film that adheres to digital glass from the outside) and we must get used to watch for if at any time the heater breaks down (or up) the temperature. Read the rest of this entry »
The Necessary Equipment for Fish: The Filter
Among the essential accessories we’re seeing, certainly the most important of all is the filter. You could say that is the heart of the aquarium. The filter is the element responsible for retaining, degrade and remove impurities and debris that accumulate and dissolve in the water by a suction pump, which forces it to flow through various filter media (sponge, coal, wool Perlon, ceramics, peat, etc..) and in which organic waste and debris are trapped. Then the water clean and suspended materials, go to the aquarium keeping the biochemical parameters of small ecosystem in stable conditions.
The market offers a variety of makes and models, each with its advantages and disadvantages. When the choice we must consider the capacity of the aquarium, the types of fish that we will accommodate it, our budget and the opinion of a professional who advises us of the most suitable type. The Necessary Equipment for Fish: The Container
It consists mainly of a glass container filled with water, a filter that cleans the water, a heater that keeps the temperature required and a fluorescent light.
The container
When you buy the aquarium we take into account the location chosen for it and what shape and size of vessel we like best. Of course this is essential because we insist on your great feature as a decorative object and the importance of their owners like to enjoy long periods with their attention and care. However, even bearing in mind this premise, it seems essential to emphasize two points:
- Size: The aquarium, the bigger is healthier: we put the glass more within our means (space or economic) as the ecosystem that it will be much more stable the larger the volume of water. They are much easier to keep large aquariums that small. Read the rest of this entry »
Health in the Tank

Fish. Like other animals, suffer from diseases. We must be attentive to their behavior to detect potential problems. The forgetful may have to stress from a bad tank.
And is that habitat change may cause damage to the fish. It also affects the species in these cases. To distinguish flags as their appetite or vivacity. Sometimes the changes in behavior are motivated to break the usual balance of them. This can occur when introducing new friends in the cubicle, removing the first space.
The face is another important indicator. What we tell if the color is healthy and his belly. It should be neither bloated nor submit a deflated appearance. Even so, we must go to the laboratory in more than one occasion. The best thing is to go to the vet and inform our investigation. He’ll know what decisions to take.
Regarding the color, we should not worry too much if it is clear but darken. But this can also be in its breeding season.
