Puerto Rican birds are in danger of extinction

Puerto rican birdsThe nightjar and the parrot in Puerto Rico are among the 189 bird species endangered in the world who published the Rare Birds Yearbook 2008 of the organization “Birdlife International, said today Puerto Rican Ornithological Society (Sopi).

The nightjar is a bird that only nests on the ground and almost disappeared with the introduction of mongooses to kill Jamaican rats in sugarcane plantations.

In the book are devoted two pages to the nightjar with images taken by photographers Puerto Rican Rodriguez Rafael Mojica, Michael and Jonathan Morel.

The president of the Sopi, Juan Camacho, said the organization is “very proud of the photographers who donated their talent to raise awareness of Puerto Rican bird (the nightjar) with the rest of the world.”

The publication noted that the night jar is endangered by “the degradation and loss of habitat, industrial and residential expansion.”

The Puerto Rican Parrot (Amazona vittata), which almost extinguished it not been for the efforts to recover and that is a type of small parrot, wearing a white border around the eyes and a red stripe on his beak. Puerto Rican birds are in danger of extinction

Called by the Taino Indians as Iguca, the Puerto Rican parrot nests from January to June and pick holes in mature trees to put two to four eggs.
